Enlarge content with the screen magnifier

The screen magnifier is a helpful tool for enlarging text and images on your screen. It can significantly improve readability, especially for people with visual impairments.

How to activate the screen magnifier on Windows:

  • Zoom in Press the Windows key and the + key simultaneously on your keyboard.
  • Zoom out To zoom out, press the Windows key and the - key.

This function is available on all Windows devices and can be quickly adjusted.

Activate the screen magnifier

Windows 10/11 (e.g., when using Edge, Chrome or Firefox)

  • Open the Start menu (click the Windows icon in the bottom left corner).
  • Click on Settings (gear icon).
  • Select the Accessibility section.
  • In the left menu, click on Magnifier.
  • Activate the screen magnifier using the slider.

Here you can also adjust settings like magnification level or viewing mode.

macOS (e.g., when using Safari)

  • Click the Apple menu in the top left corner.
  • Select System Preferences.
  • Click on Accessibility.
  • Select Zoom.
  • Enable the Zoom option using a trackpad gesture or picture-in-picture (depending on the version).

Use a screen reader for better navigation

For people with visual impairments, screen readers provide valuable support.

  • Windows:
    The built-in screen reader “Narrator” can be activated in the system settings.
  • Google Play Store:
    Apps like TalkBack are specifically developed for mobile devices.
  • Apple Store (iOS and macOS):
    VoiceOver is integrated into Apple devices and can be activated via the settings.
  • Safari (iOS and macOS):
    Safari fully supports the use of VoiceOver.

Activate the screen reader

Windows 10/11 (with Edge, Chrome or Firefox)

  • Open the Start menu.
  • Go to Settings.
  • Select Accessibility.
  • In the left-hand menu, click on Narrator.
  • Enable the screen reader (“Narrator”) using the slider.

Here you can also adjust the voice, speaking speed, and other options.

macOS (with Safari)

  • Open the Apple menu and go to System Preferences.
  • Select Accessibility.
  • Click on VoiceOver.
  • Activate the VoiceOver feature.

An introductory assistant can guide you through the basic functions on first launch.

Support through captions

When videos are available on our website, you can activate the caption feature in your browser to automatically receive subtitles for audio content. This can be especially helpful for people who are deaf or hard of hearing. Each browser provides its own way of activating this feature.

How to activate captions:

  1. Google Chrome:
    1. Open the menu in Chrome (three dots in the top right corner).
    2. Go to Settings.
    3. Select the Accessibility section.
    4. Enable the Live Caption option.
  2. Mozilla Firefox:
    Firefox does not offer a built-in live caption feature like Chrome. However, you can use extensions such as Web Captioner to get similar functionality.
  3. Microsoft Edge:
    1. Open the menu in Edge (three dots in the top right corner).
    2. Go to Settings.
    3. Select the Accessibility section.
    4. Enable the captioning feature under Media captions.

In addition to digital tools, you can also get support from medical professionals and local organizations. For example, ophthalmologists, ENT specialists, or therapists can provide valuable advice on using technologies or assistive devices. Local disability associations often offer consultations and training sessions to help users become familiar with accessible tools.
